Former Mountie in court on child luring charge
SURREY: A former cop charged with trying to lure teenage girls over the Internet has appeared before a judge.

Adam Jonathan Clarke, the former Langley Mountie facing two charges of attempted child luring, made his first appearance Thursday in Surrey Provincial Court.

The 23-year-old came under suspicion in February of 2005, when an internal complaint sparked an investigation by Langley RCMP and the Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Unit.

Clarke was arrested at work on June 5, 2005, and a police computer, allegedly used in the offences, was seized.

The alleged attempts took place on May 27 and 28 last year, and involved a 12-year-old Langley girl and a 15-year-old Richmond girl.

Nitrous oxide arrests made
The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, working with the FBI, concluded a three-year investigation into the sale of nitrous oxide during the annual Redwood Run motorcycle rally Sunday, with the arrest of three suspects, including one who may be a Hells Angel.

Robert Poulin, 59, of East Palo Alto, Anthony Cassandro, 40, of Redwood City, and Joseph Harrison, 42, of San Jose, were all arrested on suspicion of sale of nitrous oxide and conspiracy to commit a felony in Piercy at 2 a.m. Sunday.

Harrison was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a dangerous weapon for allegedly carrying two billy clubs.

According to an MCSO report, a search warrant was served on Poulin's Freightliner RV and the vehicle used to tow it. Deputies allegedly found and seized $64,066 in cash and 19 tanks of nitrous oxide. Seventeen of the tanks were empty.

Winnipeg arrests linked to Bandidos massacre
Police executed search and arrest warrants across Winnipeg early Friday morning in connection with the killings of eight motorcycle-gang members in southwestern Ontario this spring.

Police cordoned off this Winnipeg house after an early morning raid. (CBC) The bodies of eight men, all with links to the Bandidos biker gang, were found April 8 in a farmer's field near Shedden, Ont.

Five people have been charged with first-degree murder in the case, which Ontario police described as an "internal cleansing" of the biker gang.

A number of Winnipeg residents were already in custody by early Friday morning, following a sweep that police dubbed "Operation Octagon."

Those suspects are expected to be charged with murder, and more arrests are anticipated, police said.

Whatever it stands for, ABATE draws bikers
Motorcyclists started rumbling into Toppenish on Friday for this weekend's 28th annual ABATE of Washington Spring Opener.

The event includes concerts, a motorcycle parade and vendors. There's a bike show at 10 this morning at the Toppenish Rodeo Grounds. Motorcycles will parade through town at noon today, and winners of the motorcycle show will be announced during a 6 p.m. awards banquet. Bands will be performing, with Whiskey Creek on stage at 7 p.m., followed by Cavernous Groove at 10:30 p.m. Food, clothing and craft vendors will also be on hand.

Last year, more than 1,200 motorcyclists showed up for the event, and organizers are hoping for a similar turnout this year.

"That's about average the past couple of years," ABATE member Kathy Stafford said. "We're trying to get our numbers up."

Others shouldn't dictate helmet law

Myself and other motorcyclists have been abused by "concerned citizens" that think it's their place to tell me that I need to wear a helmet when I ride my motorcycle.

I believe that the choice I make, of what I wear when I ride is my decision. I don't tell you what cell phone to take out of your ear when you drive, or what makeup to apply while looking in the rear view mirror, or to make a left turn in front of me because you didn't see me with my lights on.

I believe the right choice is education. If you want a law, how about mandatory education for everyone who operates a motor vehicle about keeping motorcyclists alive on the road. I firmly believe in God, our country and freedom. Our forefathers laid their lives on the line for our freedom. Please don't let that be wasted by someone who thinks he or she knows what's good for me.

Motorcycles and a cure for cancer

As she rides her motorcycle between Essex and Milton on Saturday, Amy Couture will wear a shirt that sums up how she describes the experience she's had since receiving a phone call in November 2003.

"Big letters. 'Cancer sucks,'" the Milton resident said with a laugh on Wednesday, during her lunch break from work in the Sports Medicine department at Fletcher Allen Health Care's Fanny Allen campus in Colchester. "I mean, that's it, plain and simple."

Breast cancer entered Couture's life upon the discovery of a lump in her breast in fall 2003. She found out she carried a genetic mutation that left her more susceptible to developing the disease. She underwent chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and the removal of her uterus and ovaries -- aggressive treatment designed to eliminate the chance she could redevelop the disease after treatment.

Helmet or not Helmet that is the big Q
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Ben Roethlisberger apologized to the Pittsburgh Steelers, fans and his family on Thursday, hours after being released from a hospital, saying he was fortunate to be alive and pledging to wear a helmet if he ever again rides a motorcycle.

"In the past few days, I've gained a new perspective on life," the Super Bowl-winning quarterback said in a statement released by the team. "By the grace of God, I'm fortunate to be alive ... "

Roethlisberger, 24, who wrecked his bike and cracked his head on a car windshield on Monday, was discharged late Wednesday night.

The youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl was not wearing a helmet when he crashed into a car that was turning left in front of his motorcycle. Pennsylvania's mandatory helmet law was repealed in 2003.

But Roethlisberger said in the statement that if he ever rides a motorcycle again "it certainly will be with a helmet."

Doctors have said two rounds of tests showed no brain injuries, although there was a mild concussion. Doctors used small titanium plates and screws to reassemble Roethlisberger's broken jaws and repaired other broken facial bones. He also lost two teeth and chipped several others, doctors said.

Helmet law repeal effort has 'em butting heads
Michigan - The debate over whether the state should require motorcyclists to wear helmets appears geared up to drive into election season.

Even after Monday's motorcycle crash of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet, GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos confirmed his vow to sign a repeal of the state's motorcycle helmet law. Gov. Jennifer Granholm has all but promised to veto the repeal measure that cleared the state House earlier this month and awaits her signature.

The repeal would let riders 21 and older go without helmets if they have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years and have taken a safety course. The legislation also requires riders to have $10,000 in personal injury insurance.

"This has to do more with politics than governance," Lansing pollster Ed Sarpolus said.

7 killed so far during Laconia Bike Week
A Canadian woman who was a passenger on a motorcycle riding on the Kancamagus Highway yesterday afternoon was killed in a bizarre accident when a tree fell on her, according to authorities.

Louise Croft, 43, of Ontario, Canada, is the seventh motorcyclist since Friday to die on New Hampshire roadways during the annual Motorcycle Week.

Croft was a passenger on a motorcycle that had just left the Sabbaday Falls turnout on Route 113, the Kancamagus Highway that stretches between Conway and Lincoln.

New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Kevin Duffy said she was struck by a "decayed" tree that fell suddenly on the road. Fire and ambulance personnel from Conway Village were dispatched to the accident 15 miles west of town at about 4:15 p.m., Deputy Chief Keith Noble said.

Ex-cop charged in biker 'cleansing'
WINNIPEG — Three Winnipeg men with links to the notorious Bandidos biker gang — including a former police officer — were charged Friday in the massacre of eight fellow gang members and associates in Ontario.

Dwight Mushey, 36, Marcello Aravena, 30, and Michael Sandham, 36, each face eight charges of first-degree murder following early-morning police searches at three homes in the Manitoba capital.

Police described Mushey and Sandham as full-patch members of the Texas-based Bandidos and Aravena as a “prospect,” meaning he is not yet a full-fledged member.

Sandham is also a former constable with the East St. Paul Police Service, north of Winnipeg — a fact Winnipeg police Deputy Chief Menno Zacharias conceded is a concern.

“As a police officer, naturally, he would have been exposed to training materials relative to motorcycle gangs and organized crime,” Zacharias said. “And as a working officer, he would have access to a variety of related information.”

“It’s a concern, but I don’t know what actual part that may have played in any of this.”

Three More Charged in Sheddon Biker deaths
With help from the Winnipeg Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police has arrested and charged three more people in connection with the April gang murders near Sheddon, Ontario.
One of those charged is 36-year old Mike Sandham, a former police constable with the East St. Paul police. Police say he's now a full patch member of the Bandidos motorcycle gang.

The raids in Winnipeg this morning happened shortly after 5 o'clock.

The others charged are 36-year old Dwight Mushey, and 30-year old Marcello Aravena both of Winnipeg. Mushey is a full patch member, while Aravena is a prospect member.
Police say they'll be returned to St. Thomas, Ontario by the OPP this afternoon for a court appearance this evening.

The OPP will be conducting a follow up investigation in and around Winnipeg in the coming weeks.

Those charged join two three others already facing eight counts each of first degree murder, and two others who've been charged with eight counts of accessory after the fact to murder.

Keeping the gangs out
Police are taking names when it comes to gangs in Lower Bucks County.

"T," "Shaka" and "Panhead" are some of the nicknames of alleged street and motorcycle gang members who have been arrested in recent months. "Sex, Money, Murder," "G-Shine" and the "Breed" are some of the gangs.

During a press conference Wednesday in Lower Makefield, federal, state, county and local law enforcement announced plans to coordinate intelligence-gathering efforts in the region as a first step toward stopping street gangs from becoming entrenched in Bucks County and the surrounding area.

But it's not just names authorities plan to write down.

Calling the Bloods street gang the predominant gang in the region, U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan said authorities in the Bucks area are getting a "real picture" of the gang presence in the area. In addition to identifying gang members during traffic stops, authorities hope to assess gangs' criminal activity  drug dealing, auto theft, gun trafficking, street extortion and recruiting efforts.

Cop shot while executing search warrant
Canada - A brief but bloody doorstep shootout left one police officer wounded and a suspect dead after a Quebec provincial police tactical team tried to serve a warrant early Wednesday.

The heavily armed tactical team, who wear bullet proof vests and helmets, were attempting to enter the scenic waterfront home around 6 a.m. when a blast of gunfire erupted.

An unidentified 53-year-old man and a police officer went down in the clash.

The police officer suffered minor injuries but the man died in hospital, said Montreal police Const. Benoit Couture.

Montreal police took over the investigation from Quebec provincial police as required under provincial law.
