FARMINGTON — Despite the studded leather, black shades and tight bandanas, the bikers looping from Farmington and back this weekend are hardly rough riders. In fact, these herd-happy travelers are all about charity.

For the second year, Bikers for Foster Kids is holding its annual Poker Run. Throughout Saturday, bikers will travel from Farmington and back, stopping at different points to collect a poker card. Upon their return to Farmington, the bikers will play the hand for money that will go to buying much-needed supplies for foster kids and their foster parents.

"We're all really good-hearted people, and we've all seen our share of hard times. We've all had our own hard knocks," said Julie Head, vice president of Bikers for Foster Kids.

What's become a full-time charity started as a "party" thrown by president Rhonda Moreland. Moreland, who works for the state's Children, Youth and Families Department, saw the need for materials such as diapers, formula, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other items. So she got her biker friends together. They raised $5,600.

"Bikers are probably one of the most giving groups I've ever met. They're giving almost every weekend during riding season," Moreland said. This year, they hope to exceed last year's amount.

The event kicks off with registration at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Kelly's Motorcycle General Store is the initial meeting place, and bikes will leave between 11 a.m. and noon.
