It's doesn't start until next week, but thousands of bikers are already taking over the Black Hills for the 66th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and more are on the way. But getting into Sturgis is easier this year, thanks to a newly completed interchange.

The sound of motorcycles means only one thing. It's rally time again. But this year, thousands of bikers on their way to the fun will have an easier time, because of the interchange at the edge of town.

South Dakota D.O.T. Engineer Steve Palmer said, "The last two weeks have been pretty much crunch time. Last week probably Wednesday, Thursday, Friday we had probably about 100 people working up here at any one time."

Crews finished the 12 million dollar project just this week. It makes getting on and off interstate 90 smoother.

Palmer said, "Now all of the ramps are completely on the east side of the tracks in this whole intersection. So everything is complied together so we don't have to be splitting people up."

It took two years and two phases to complete. But all that's left to do now are a few minor touch-ups.

Palmer said, "We got a couple crews out there right now finishing up the miscellaneous striping, some guide signs to help the bikers around so they know how to get to Spearfish and Rapid City, just in and out of town."

It's work that will help make the ride easier for thousands of bikers.

Palmer said, "It's a big relief to be done right now, to know that we've got bikes coming in and they're being able to get on the roads when they want to."

The highway department has also installed three portable signals to help ease traffic in and around Sturgis. The rally official starts on Monday.
