A member of the Nomads bikie gang has been charged with several firearms offences after a shooting in Darby Street last week.

Just after 2.30am Wednesday July 25, police were called to reports of a public place shooting in Cooks Hill.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and located bullet holes in the exterior of an apartment block. No one was injured.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from the Criminal Groups Squad’s Strike Force Raptor North commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

As part of ongoing inquiries, Strike Force Raptor North conducted a Firearms Prohibition Order search at a home unit on Darby Street just after 5pm on Friday July 27.

During the search, police located a loaded .45 calibre handgun and a beanie with ‘eyeholes’ cut out. Both items were seized for further examination.

A crime scene warrant was subsequently executed at the unit and examined by specialist forensic officers.

The 42-year-old male occupant of the home, who was the subject of an FPO since 2016, had been arrested earlier in the afternoon by local police for an unrelated assault.

He was subsequently charged with possess unregistered firearm-pistol, not keep firearm safely-pistol, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, acquire pistol-subject to firearms prohibition order, acquire ammunition-subject to firearms prohibition order, possess unauthorised pistol, and common assault.

The man, who is a member of the Nomads OMCG, was refused bail to re-appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
