Police investigating the shooting murder of a bikie boss are raiding six properties across Sydney's south west this morning.

Officers believe they have located the cars used as part of the planning and execution of Mick Hawi earlier this year.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

The 37-year-old was shot dead at close range as he got into his luxury four-wheel drive outside a Fitness First gym at Rockdale in February.

The stolen getaway car was found dumped in a nearby laneway, but the gunman remains on the loose.

At the time police said they believed a man dressed in all-black clothing and a balaclava had committed the shooting.

A number of people witnessed murder at the popular gym, with some telling the ABC they had been left traumatised.

Before his murder, Mr Hawi kept a low profile after serving a prison sentence for manslaughter over the death of Hells Angel bikie associate Anthony Zervas in a brawl at Sydney Airport in 2009.

During the airport brawl Mr Zervas was bashed with a metal bollard and stabbed several times.

Mr Hawi was initially convicted of murder over the incident and sentenced to 28 years in prison after a nine-month trial in 2015, but the NSW Court Of Criminal Appeal overturned his conviction on several grounds.

At the time, Chief Justice Tom Bathurst, one of three judges ruling on the appeal, said he could not be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Hawi "inflicted fatal blows to the head of Mr Zervas using a bollard" and that "it was not open for Mr Hawi to be convicted on that basis".

He was released on parole in May 2015.
