Strengthening the authority of police when they search outlaw motorcycle gang clubhouses is about disrupting organised crime through intelligence gathering, the NSW government’s Hunter representative says.

The new laws, unveiled on Monday, mean officers executing warrants at bikie clubhouses will have clearer powers to search anyone at the site, compel any person to give their name and address and force people at the premises to move on.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald spoke at Cessnock Police Station after the announcement about how the bolstered authority would benefit the Hunter.

Mr MacDonald commended NSW Police Strike Force Raptor North for its work combating bikie-related crime and said he hoped the stronger laws sent “a strong signal to criminal gangs” that the government would support police.

“The Lower Hunter has seen too much OMCG [outlaw motorcycle gang] presence,” he said.

“This is about protecting the community through disruption and criminal intelligence gathering.”
