Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante suggested Rhéal Fortin do his job and keep to his own jurisdiction Tuesday after the Bloc Québécois MP criticized her for not endorsing regulations to ban events like the Hells Angels wedding held in downtown Montreal on Saturday.

She added that she would be amenable to new laws if the police or population supported them over safety concerns.

“As a federal minister, I would invite (Fortin) to stick to his own spheres of operations,” Plante told reporters. “I find he is making questionable and problematic connections.”

On Saturday, Plante said there wasn’t a need for new legislation that would ban certain associations or make it illegal to show allegiance to a criminal organization by displaying the organization’s logos.

The comments came following the highly publicized wedding of Hells Angels full-patch member Martin Robert to the daughter of the former head of a drug-trafficking network at the ornate Windsor Ballroom on Peel St. Saturday, attended by nearly 300 people.

Fortin had said Plante should be more concerned with the Hells Angels than with “the health status of pit bulls,” the Journal de Montréal reported.

We are speaking with the police and the population and seeing if there are more events of this type.”
“I would invite him to do his job at the federal level,” Plante said of Fortin Tuesday. “On our side, we are looking at the situation closely. I never said I was against the legislation, but at this moment I do not see the need. But we are speaking with the police and the population and seeing if there are more events of this type.

“And if the population says it’s something they are worried about, then we should have regulations.”

Police were in heavy attendance Saturday, taking photos and videos to document all those who came. Among the guests were reputed Hells Angels leader Salvatore Cazzetta.

A 50-year-old man in an advanced state of inebriation who was reportedly at the wedding was arrested nearby after the event for allegedly being aggressive and unco-operative with police officers. He was released from custody at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and faces charges of assaulting a police officer.
