Upgraded felony charges were unveiled Monday for a Chicago Police officer charged in the severe beating of two patrons at a north suburban lounge in May.

Gerald Callahan, 42, pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, after fleeing the scene of an attack on two customers at Chambers Seafood Grill & Chop, 6881 N. Milwaukee in Niles on May 17, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin.

Prosecutors reviewed the incident and decided to upgrade the charges filed against Callahan. The two misdemeanor counts of battery he was initically charged have been dropped, Cook County State's Attorney's office Tandra Simonton said.

Bond for the upgraded charges was set at $5,000 on Monday by Cook County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Chambers. The judge ordered that Callahan surrender his firearms, avoid contact with the victims and witnesses and avoid drinking any "intoxicating alcohol," Conklin said.

Niles police said Callahan had attacked at 61-year-old Morton Grove man and a 50-year-old Niles woman.

"According to witnesses, Callahan attacked the two victims for no apparent reason," Niles police Sgt. Tom Davis said.

The man suffered lacerations and bruises to his head and face, while the woman suffered lacerations on her arm and lip, police said.

Chicago Police relieved Callahan of his police powers while the incident is being investigated.

Callahan has a history of alleged erratic behavior — keeping his job only after the Police Board rejected former Police Supt. Phil Cline’s move to dismiss him in 2006 for threatening his fellow officers.

Callahan is scheduled to appear Sept. 29 in the Skokie courthouse.,copcharge0811058.article
