Hell's Angels will descend on Riber

A TINY community is bracing itself for invasion by 500 Hell's Angels.
Bikers from the Ashfield Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club will descend on Riber Castle for the group's 20th anniversary party on Friday June 9 – and will camp over for the entire weekend enjoying live music.

Residents have said they are terrified the party will spill out of the historic castle – soon to be the site of a major housing development – and spell trouble in the small hilltop community.

And villagers have also questioned why the castle is deemed safe to host the party – after its structural integrity was called into question by its owners at a recent public inquiry.

One Riber resident said: "The police knocked on all the doors in the village to warn us. It is terrifying.

"It is a private party so there's not much the police can do, but if people are causing trouble or going out on motorbikes late at night that's a different story.

"People here are going to be buying in supplies and not stepping outside for the whole weekend.

"It's interesting that Crosstower Ventures said during the public inquiry that the castle wasn't safe, but now they're allowing 500 people in there for a party."

Inspector Paul Corton of Matlock police said officers would be stationed in a mobile unit in Riber during the weekend.

He added: "I want to reassure the community that a policing response is being put in place to ensure that local residents are not unduly affected by the event.

"During the weekend police officers will be present in the village and its surrounding area, and the 'B' Division Mobile Police Station will be parked in Riber as a central point for people to contact with any concerns.

"We are also working closely with the environmental health department of Derbyshire Dales District Council and the event organisers to ensure that noise disruption to residents is kept to a minimum."

He added that officers had no reason to suspect the event would cause any public disorder.

Representatives for both the castle owners Crosstower Ventures and the Ashfield Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club were unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
