May 31--COLLINSVILLE -- An Illinois State Police trooper found $445,000 in cash in a tractor-trailer in early May, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

Trooper Nate McVickers pulled over the driver of the truck May 1 on an interstate near Collinsville and discovered the cash stashed in a compartment for one of the truck's stereo speakers. Two screws were missing from the speaker cover.

The driver, Antonio Villanueva of Dallas, gave permission to search the truck. Villanueva's age could not be determined Tuesday.

A drug-sniffing police dog was brought in, and it alerted on the duct-taped bundles of cash. Police suspect the money was intended for buying drugs or was the proceeds of a drug sale.

Both Villanueva and his passenger, Tyrone Munoz, 17, denied ownership and knowledge of the money. Munoz's address was not available.

Villanueva already was facing federal charges of smuggling illegal aliens. Munoz has a prior conviction for marijuana trafficking in Florida.

Whether the two will face charges was unavailable Tuesday.

Madison County prosecutors filed a complaint Tuesday, asking that the money be forfeited to state police. Villanueva was mailed a notice that he has 45 days to file a response.
